The growth rate of the world population, the expansion of residential areas and the decrease in agricultural areas necessitate the development of sustainability policies not only in the textile sector but also in all sectors. Recently, Sustainability Talks Istanbul was held as a hybrid at Zorlu PSM. The prominent topics of the conference this year were circularity, sustainable raw materials, supply chain transparency and traceability, renewable energy and water. İTHİB President Ahmet Öksüz stated that the most successful port of the circular economy model in global trade will be the Turkish textile sector. İsmail Gülle, President of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), said, "Exporters are the soldiers who know the concept of sustainability best."
The stakeholders of our country's textile industry, institutions such as the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters' Association, the Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM) in areas such as increasing awareness on sustainability in textiles with various researches, reports, meetings and seminars on sustainability, ensuring production modernization, technology modernization for manufacturers to adapt to changing demands. they are working. TİM President İsmail Gülle stated that they shared the TİM Sustainability Action Plan roadmap, which they prepared with the motto of "producing for the world without consuming the world," with the public in June, and that they will present the tools and methods that will enable companies to measure their corporate carbon footprint with scientific methods as TİM. Our project of supporting key sectors of IPA Sustainable Industry transformation, which will enable our exporters to benefit more from the EU funds focused on the Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Green Deal, is one of the two projects that received the support of the European Commission."
Energy efficiency for sustainability in the textile sector, zero waste principle, recycling approach and the application of the circular economy model in global trade come to the fore. For this, it is necessary to separate the infrastructure of washing and dyeing water, to recycle the washing water, to expand the technologies that use less water in washing and dyeing, and to reduce the share of fossil fuels in production as much as possible.
Birce Avcu, who won the Turkey Home Textile Design Competition organized by Uludağ Textile Exporters' Association (UTİB) with the theme of "Creating a Sustainable Lifestyle", stated that she is working on wearable biodegradable materials as an alternative to fabric. Avcu said, “One of the biggest problems of today, with the effects of the pandemic, rapidly developing technology and consumption culture, is the deprivation of nature. I combined my home textile designs with hemp fibers, which is considered the most environmentally friendly fiber nowadays, when we are losing soil and water. With this collection, I aim to offer an alternative life with designs that minimize harm to the environment and people and that we undertake to consume more responsibly.” Pelin Aykar, who came in third in the competition, explained her design as follows: “The subject of entropy in my brother's thermodynamics book caught my attention and I created my theme called Entropy. I chose a hemp, organic cotton blend yarn and polyeasy yarn for my towel collection. My goal is to emphasize that sustainability can be applied in every field in textile.”
It is difficult to follow the source of the raw materials used in the textile industry, so the transparency of the supply lists of the brands is often on the agenda. Filofibra supplies and services the products and yarns with certificates such as GOTS and EUROPEAN FLAX, which ensures that the quality standards and production processes related to organic fibers are followed.
